The City of Cape Girardeau doesn't operate a public landfill in town; instead, residents and haulers use the City Transfer Station, where waste is consolidated before transport. A monthly fuel surcharge applies ($1.23/ton or each as of 07/01/2026). All loads must be secured or tarped per city ordinance and Missouri law, or you'll pay the $25 unsecured-load fee. Not accepted: tires, batteries, motor oil, concrete, railroad ties, automobile parts, pesticides, oil-based paint, and any hazardous material. Call for current rates before you go.

City curbside bulk options

City trash customers have two built-in options: bulk items on your regular trash day (within 3 feet of the curb, liftable by two people) and Wednesday Special Pickups for larger loads, scheduled by calling (573) 339-6351 by 3 p.m. the Tuesday before. Each residential customer gets one free Special Pickup per calendar year.

Recycling Center - 2007 Southern Expressway

The drive-through Recycling Center has bins for cardboard, glass, and single-stream (all other recyclables). Curbside recycling goes in the dark-green cart by 6 a.m. on your recycling day. Note: plastic shopping bags, garbage bags, and newspaper sleeves are no longer accepted in single-stream.

Glass drop-off locations

Glass isn't collected curbside; drop bottles and jars at Fire Station 1 (1 S Sprigg St.), Fire Station 2 (378 S Mt. Auburn Rd.), Fire Station 3 (1974 N Sprigg St.), Public Works (2007 Southern Expressway), Osage Centre (1625 N Kingshighway), or A.C. Brase Arena (410 Kiwanis Dr.).

Electronics recycling

The City contracts with Midwest Recycling Center (MRC) for electronics recycling at 2007 Southern Expressway - computers, printers, phones, stereos, power tools, microwaves, and more. TVs and monitors are NOT accepted for recycling and must go to the transfer station for disposal.

Used motor oil

Used motor oil and certain other fluids are accepted at the Fleet Maintenance shop, 2007 Southern Expressway, Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (no commercial oil). Don't mix in solvents, water, gas, or antifreeze.

Household hazardous waste (HHW)

The City periodically offers a grant-funded HHW drop-off event in partnership with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Southeast Missouri Solid Waste Management District. Watch city announcements for dates. In the meantime: latex paint can be solidified with cat litter or sand (two parts to one part paint) and put in the trash; oil-based paint is hazardous and must wait for an HHW event. Tires

Tires are not accepted at the transfer station. Leave them with a tire retailer (Missouri charges a 50-cent scrap-tire fee on new tires) or a scrap-tire recycler.
